Joining the work force
By Dan Nelson
Students in NBC Special Education Program are gaining experience not only in school but out in the working community. Various businesses in North Bend are helping some NBC students gain valuable experience through working. It is great to be in a smaller, tight knit community and these businesses are helping these students gain some work experience.
The way the program works is I contact a business that would have some possibilities for students to work. I talk to the owner and discuss with them what I need for my students. If we both feel it can be worked out we then come up with a list of jobs that they would like us to do. We are only there a short time so we need to make the most of it. The students do not get paid with money but the owners are good about giving the guys a pop or a hamburger basket once in a while to keep them working hard. They are earning credit through their work experience.
It has been very well received in the community and I am grateful that they are willing to help us out to make these kids ready for employment when they leave school.
